Grooming Your Cat admin July 5, 2017 Cat Basics Comments Grooming Your Cat Cats are suckers for cleanliness and as a cat owner this is one of your responsibilities to your cat. You can start grooming your cat by brushing its fur. This will remove loose hair, reducing the occurrence of hairballs in your cat when it grooms itself. These hair balls are sometimes difficult to dislodge and can proceed to block the intestines, a situation that can be extremely painful for your cat and even lead to its death. It therefore goes without saying that a well groomed cat stays clean and healthy. If your cat has short hair, you only need to groom him on a weekly basis but if it is the long-haired species, you should comb and brush the hair every day. Observe your cats’ coat and skin while you groom it for lumps in the fur coat or irritations on its skin. Brush the cat from the head to the tail when you are brushing its back from one side to the other. Always brush in the direction of growth of the fur when you are grooming your cat. Brushing your cats face and paws can easily earn you bites and scratches so keep away from these parts when grooming your cat. Some cats do not like the brush but can be more tolerant to a grooming glove. A cat which was groomed from a tender age will likely be more tolerant to it than those which are already bigger, and will grow in this love to the point that they start looking forward to grooming sessions. Take particular care to your cats’ teeth, claws, ears and eyes while grooming your cat. The ears should have a pink color and should be free from ear mites. When dirt accumulates in your cats ears, ear mites will develop in them, making them shrivel and can lead to your cat losing its ability to hear. They are hard to get rid of and very annoying to the cat so the best way to avoid them is to keep your cats ears very clean. Ensure you always examine your cat very well each time you groom it. You can encourage it to stay still when you groom it by giving it treats and praises when it does keep still. If it does not want to be groomed at the moment, do not force it to avoid it turning violent. Let it go and try again later or the next day n with time, your cat will love being groomed and even look forward to it.
